Many of our customers searching for cheap deals on their mobile contracts claim they just want a basic phone that makes phone calls and sends texts. “I don’t use the internet or that facebooky thing,” they say. “I simply won’t use all those features”. This seems like an old fashioned view, but its fine with us and takes our minds back to the beginning of the mobile revolution.
Its just over 30 years since Sir Ernest Harrison received the first UK mobile phone call on a handset weighing just over an astonishing 5kg. This signaled the beginning of the mobile era and by the end of its first year in 1985 around 12,000 devices had been snapped up. These heavyweight, cumbersome devices are a far cry from todays high end smartphones but provided a vital stepping stone for the industry and enhanced the social status of a select few rich and famous.
How things have changed…according to figures supplied by Ofcom, by the 4th quarter of 2013 there were an astonishing 83.1 million mobile subscriptions in the UK alone. There are now more than 100 mobile phone manufacturers worldwide and some, like Samsung, have over 70 different models in their current range.
Modern smartphones have blown the doors of possibility wide open and provide a gateway for an incredible range of education, business and social resources. The ever swelling app stores allow users to completely customize their chosen devices with virtually anything at their fingertips. Figures suggest that the average UK adult will be on their mobile devices for 30-35 hours every month. This means that in only 30 years nearly 5% of our daily habits have changed.
For some incredibly mid blowing statistics on mobile and Internet usage just take a look around this site we stumbled upon. It has live figures on everything from smartphones sold to tweets per second, which are truly incredible.
The fact is that over just 30 years we have changed into data gobbling, social media addicts who openly admit to feeling “naked” without our mobiles. At Eden we embrace the wave of technology that’s quickly changing the way we do business. However we also salute the people who stand firm with their views, refuse to become embroiled in apps and selfies, hide themselves from status updates and tweets and who simply enjoy the life they have right in front of them…until their mobile phone rings of course!
When we’re looking to replace our smartphone, why do we tend to put the blinkers on and limit our choice to the high-end models from Samsung, HTC and, of course…. Apple. Maybe it’s time to look further afield?! Well that’s what we think after trialling the Moto G 4G from Motorola. Hardly new kids on the block, Motorola have however been left out in the cold somewhat with anything memorable since the mid 90’s.
This looks set to change with their budget priced Moto G model. For around £150 you get probably the best screen at the price, a very capable quad-core processor, a 5-megapixel camera and the latest version of Android, 4.4.3 KitKat. Models from Samsung & HTC at this price have all suffered with processor speed, ruling them out for the business user, but with it’s a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, backed up by 1GB of RAM, we found it to be more than powerful enough for most common tasks.
So when you need a very capable, reliable workhorse that won’t make your staff feel like they’ve been given a budget handset, take a look at the Moto G from Motorola. It’s certainly worth a look if you’re after a 4G phone without a top-end price.
